December 14, 2016

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program will no longer be on a first come, first served basis. Starting January 3, 2017, sponsors will have 30 days to submit an online interest form. IRCC will then randomly select 10,000 individuals who have completed the form, and invite them to send in their complete application package.

Effective immediately, the 4-year cumulative duration rule will no longer apply to temporary foreign workers in Canada. The Government of Canada takes early actions to improve the TFWP by preventing unnecessary hardship and instability for both workers and employers.

The Spouse and Common-Law Partner in Canada (SCLPC) work permit pilot is extended for another year. This program gives spouses and common-laws a chance to work in Canada on an Open Work Permit while their sponsorship application is being finalized. The program has been extended until December 21, 2017.


November 25, 2016

Visa requirements for Mexican citizens will be lifted on December 1, 2016. Starting today, Mexican citizens can apply for an eTA, for travel starting on December 1st.

Substantial changes that affect the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) for Express Entry will become effective Nov. 19. Changes include decreased points for LMIAs, but also additional points for those with Canadian post-secondary education, and points for job offers for LMIA-Exempt work permit holders. ESDC announces the LMIA cap on low-wage positions will remain temporarily frozen at 20%. The cap was scheduled to reduce to 10% on July 1, 2016. If employers employed TFWs in low-wage positions for the first time after June 20, 2014, or are a first-time user of the Program, the 10% cap will remain.

IRCC implements special measures to support those affected by the Fort McMurray wildfires including priority processing of documents, free replacement of citizenship and immigration documents, and waiving of certain requirements for visitors, workers, and students.

AINP makes exceptions to those affected by the wildfires in Fort McMurray. If you are unemployed due to the wildfire, your application will be put on hold up to one year from the date of evacuation, and your application will be returned to its original spot for processing after new or alternative employment is sought.

IRCC announces a delay to the eTA mandatory requirement. From March 15, 2016 until fall 2016, travelers who do not have an eTA can board their flight, as long as they have appropriate travel documents, such as a valid passport.

Electronic Travel Authorizations (eTA’s) become mandatory on March 15th. If you are a foreign national from a visa-exempt country, and fly to or transit through Canada, you will need an eTA. US citizens and foreign nationals with a valid travel visa are exempt.

Minister McCallum proposes Bill C-6, An Act to Amend the Citizenship Act, which aims to repeal parts of C-24 including:

  • provisions that allow citizenship to be revoked from dual citizens who engage in certain acts against the national interest;
  • time permanent residents must be physically present in Canada before qualifying for Citizenship;
  • intend to reside in Canada; and
  • language requirements.

New administrative and monetary penalties for employers who violate conditions of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the International Mobility Program come into force today. New consequences for violations include warnings, financial penalties, and bans, which will replace the previous single two-year ban.

Starting Oct. 26, 2015, CIC will introduce a new electronic portal for employers who submit offers of employment that are LMIA-exempt. The new Employer Portal will replace the current IMM5802 form. Note that IMM5802 forms cannot be used for work permit applications after Nov. 20, 2015.
